7th Annual Lynwood Alumni College/Career Conference
The mission of the Lynwood Alumni College/Career Conference is to encourage Lynwood students to pursue their education beyond high school. Lynwood alumni present workshops on various topics relating to higher education. Alumni also represented their respective colleges/universities at the conference's college fair.
Various student workshops are presented by Lynwood alumni. The workshops include topics such as Why Go to College?, Choosing the Best College for Me, Admissions Process, College Academics, Transferring from a 2 yr. to a 4 yr., The Community College Option, Show Me the Money: Financial Aid, AB 540, Life Skills After High School, How to Prepare Yourself NOW to Get a Job After College, Nursing as a Career Choice, and Career Development. Parent workshops are also provided and focus on financial aid, the admissions process, and ways to help their children achieve academically. A parent panel was also included to showcase parents who have had their children attend college.
The conference was established in January 2000 by a group of Lynwood alumni who wanted to improve college enrollment at Lynwood High School. Alumni wanted to come back to their community and become role models for current high school students. The conference is unique because alumni organize and donate countless volunteer hours to hold this annual conference. It is the only known college conference of its kind. Without the help of community organizations and businesses, the conference would not be feasible. The motto, "If we can do it, so can you!" is constantly reinforced in student's minds.
